The Beast of Rutland:

A Short Story

Here in Rutland, a team of scientists discovered a magnificent skeleton on the shores of the reservoir.

Identified as a magnificent ichthyosaur ‘sea dragon’, the 180 million year-old skeleton derives from the early Jurassic period - and was found just a stone’s throw away from our hotel.

It seems the Rutland reservoir has been hiding more secrets than its local community were aware of; and we can’t wait to find out more about the history of this beautiful creature.

To celebrate this incredible discovery, we’re asking you, our community, to create your very own short story that reflects your interpretation of the mysterious creature. We welcome you to be as creative and as imaginative as you possibly can; there are no rules!

After submitting your entry, you’ll be entered into a prize draw, where you’ll have the chance to win:

  • 1st = Dinner for two people in our new Blossoms restaurant & an overnights stay in one of our newly refurbished rooms
  • 2nd = Bed and Breakfast in one of our newly refurbished rooms for two people
  • 3rd = Dinner for two people in our new Blossoms restaurant

If, throughout your story, you can successfully tie the plot to our hotel & spa, you will for sure capture the eye of our team at Rutland Hall who will be selecting the winners.

The competition will close on the 30th of January and we will announce the winner on the 6th of February, the last day of National Storytelling Week.

Competition is now closed!
